India’s road network is extensive and diverse, encompassing over 5.5 million kilometers of National Highways, State Highways, and rural roads.

National Highways are the backbone of India’s road network, accounting for less than 2% of the total road network but carrying more than 40% of total road traffic. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) maintains national highways, which are critical to the country’s economic development and connectivity.

State highways, on the other hand, connect each state’s major cities and towns and are maintained by the respective state governments.

The rural road network, which includes village roads, is critical for connecting rural communities and providing access to essential services. The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) is a central government scheme that aims to connect unconnected rural habitations to all-weather roads.

The Indian government has launched several initiatives in recent years to improve the country’s road network, including the Bharatmala Pariyojana, which aims to improve connectivity by developing approximately 34,800 kilometers of National Highways, and the Sagarmala project, which aims to modernize the country’s ports and improve coastal shipping to reduce reliance on road and rail transportation.

Overall, India’s road map is constantly evolving, with the government and various organizations working to improve connectivity and the country’s economy.
