Gandhiji was born to a government officer and a pious Hindu mother. He has a lifelong fascination with spirituality and religion. He returned to India to practice law after finishing his legal education in London.

He became active in the Indian independence struggle, however, and began calling for peaceful civil disobedience. He pushed people to boycott British goods in favor of swadeshi, or Indian-made items. He also led a number of nonviolent rallies and marches, including the well-known Salt March, which challenged the British salt tax.
